Caption:
The Sign of the Star (Apex, 1914). One Sheet (27 X 41). , An amazing piece of film history! This dramatic Otis stone litho is for a German film, Der Stern, which had a limited release in the U.S. in 1914 under the title, The Sign of the Star. It features one of the most interesting actresses of the entire silent era, who made several films in Germany (1913-1914) under the name of Fern Andree, before changing it to Fern Andra. She was originally Vernal Andrews, from Wasetka, Illinois, and would grow up with a zest for life few in the entertainment industry have equaled. She toured Europe as a circus dancer, invented herself as an Outrageous Ballerina and opened at the Ragtime Revue in London. Then, on to Germany, where she studied with none other than Max Reinhardt. She entered the German film industry on the ground floor level and for 15 years was one of its true pioneers and stars. She wrote, produced, directed, and acted in many films, including this one. She was prolific at bareback riding, tightrope, racecar driving, motorcycles, slalom, bobsledding, and oh yes...boxing! She had what the critics called ..malicious eyes, and a series of stunning German postcards were done from her photographs. This could be one of the only known copies of this poster. It was put on old linen, long ago, and was luckily stabilized. There is smudging in the borders, fold separations, ink stains and bleedthrough from the other side of the poster, and dirt smudges in the left side of the image. Very Good+ on Linen.
