Caption:
These Three (United Artists, 1936). One Sheet (27 X 41). Based on Lillian Hellmans controversial play, The Childrens Hour, this film underwent some major revisions before being approved by the Hays Office due to the lesbian theme of the original work. The story, about two young women, Martha and Karen (Miriam Hopkins and Merle Oberon), who run a girls boarding school, and a lie spread by an embittered student about Marthas improper relationship with Dr. Joseph Cardin (Joel McCrea) that threatens to ruin the lives of all involved, is based on an actual event that took place in Scotland in 1810. In a probably apocryphal, but oft-repeated story, when producer Samuel Goldwyn was told that the lead characters in Hellmans play were lesbians, he said, Who cares? Well make them Americans. The wonderful stone litho one sheet offered here had pinholes and crossfold separations, but professional restoration has made these flaws virtually invisible. The posters from this film have always been rare and this copy was unknown until now. Very Fine on Linen.
