Thunder (MGM, 1929). One Sheet (27 X 41). , A highly significant find, this powerful stone litho one sheet was inspired by Lon Chaneys final silent film (he would make one more talking picture after this, 1930s The Unholy Three). Here he plays a train engineer whose obsession with punctuality first leads to tragedy and then to a heroic act that saves the lives of flood victims. Although Chaney died quite young, he had a prodigious career in theatre and silent film. He made his film debut in 1912, and quickly established himself as a dramatic actor, capable of creating and donning incredibly cumbersome make-up and costumes. In 1923, Universal Pictures President Carl Laemmle chose Chaney for his role as the misshapen bell-ringer in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and in 1925 to play the disfigured composer in The Phantom of the Opera. This almost-never-seen one sheet has very few signs of handling for its age: extra vertical folds, crossfold separations, faint pencil writing in the h of Chaney, and smudging in the red letters of Thunder. Illuminated by his lantern, a craggy-faced, resolute Chaney stares out into the night, accompanied by the softly lit train rumbling behind. Folded, Very Fine-.
