Vamps and Variety (Vitagraph, 1919). One Sheet (27.5 X 40). , Joe Rock began his film career as a stunt double for Mary Pickford (he stood 53), and shortly thereafter was given star billing at Vitagraph for a series of comedies alongside Earl Montgomery. Hes best remembered today for producing a series of 12 two reel comedies starring Stan Laurel in the 1920s. Rock and Montgomery appear to be living the good life, sizing up bathing beauties on this stone litho one sheet from Vamps and Variety. Of particular interest is the swimming costume donned by the woman poised ready to dive. A few years before this film was made, actress and avid swimmer Annette Kellerman was arrested by the Boston police for wearing such indecent beach attire. Her bravado spawned a movement away from billowy swimming clothes and paved the way for the more practical one piece suit. A Heritage first, this poster has been restored to address only some minor signs of handling, including pinholes and crossfold separation. The linen has been trimmed to the border and the poster has been trimmed on each side, as the original dimensions were 28 X 42. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
