Magical Maestro (MGM, 1952). One Sheet (27 X 41) Tex Avery Directed. , Another delightful Tex Avery animated short, Magical Maestro tells the story of the Great Poochini, a canine opera singer. Mysto the Magician asks the pooch to allow him to perform an opening act for the show, including summoning flowers and rabbits to appear using his magic wand. Avery used a cartoon convention only seen in his films, called the hair gag. Because cartoons were shown originally in movie theatres, the film strip, if loaded incorrectly, would rub against the gate mechanism, shaving off tiny hairs of celluloid. These hairs would get caught in the gate of the projector. Sometimes it would skim across the projection light, resulting in a gigantic hair appearing on the movie screen. In this cartoon, the opera singer pauses mid-song to pluck the offending hair from the film and tosses it aside. Poochini is portrayed by Spike the Bulldog (seen here on this one sheet), a frequent star of Averys cartoons, and voiced by Carlos Julio Ramirez. Mystos voice is compliments of Daws Butler (Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Quick-Draw McGraw, and Elroy Jetson). This rare one sheet is a Heritage first, and restoration has it display-ready. Touchup has been applied to folds, a tear in the upper right corner and top border, bottom left edge wear, and a chip at the bottom right. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
