Caption:
Melody Cruise (RKO, 1933). One Sheet (27 X 41). , In his twenty year career, Mark Sandrich earned a reputation as one of the top musical directors in Hollywood, with Fred Astaire/ Ginger Rogers classics such as Top Hat, Follow the Fleet, Shall We Dance, along with Bing Crosbys Christmas perennial Holiday Inn, amongst his many credits. Sandrich started his career directing comedy shorts, winning an Academy Award for the short So This is Harris! (1933), which launched him in the genre of musicals. Offered here is a true gem, a breathtaking one sheet from his first full-length musical feature film. It stars bandleader Phil Harris as a millionaire bachelor, whose presence aboard a cruise ship gains him too much attention from fortune-hungry females. This very colorful and detailed stone litho one sheet has been professionally restored to address the main issue of the missing top 1/4 portion of the poster, including anything above the top horizontal fold which extends through the middle of the word Cruise. There are also small tears in the bottom border, and some fold wear. The restoration of all of theses issues is exquisite, and no flaws are noticeable until looked at it under strong light. A striking work of art, it will be a long time coming before paper from this very special pre-Code title is available again. Good+ on Linen.
