Based on a true story, the film tells of the hazardous trip to Tahiti, with Bligh disciplining the crew in the harshest manner possible, and of the mutiny that happens on the return trip. Gable, Laughton and Franchot Tone were all nominated for Best Actor, losing to Victor McLaglen in The Informer.
