Remarks:
First of Johnny Weissmuller's appearances as Tarzan. Although actually born in what is now Romania, he claimed to be born in PA, presumably to get on the US Olympic swim team, he did win five gold medals, 67 world and 52 national titles, and was acclaimed by Associated Press to be the greatest swimmer of the first half of the 20th century. Weissmuller performed the first "Tarzan Yell", which got him out of trouble while playing golf in Cuba in 1958. His cart was surrounded by rebel solders who did not know who he was until he got out of the cart and did his famous Tarzan yell. He not only was not arrested, but the soldiers gave him an escort to his hotel-according to book by Weissmuller's son named "Tarzan, My Father".
Caption:
Tarzan the Ape Man (MGM, 1932). One Sheet (27 X 41). , By far the rarest Tarzan one sheet known, this is only the second example of this poster to ever surface. It is also the most sought after and important as it is from the first film in the series to star Johnny Weissmuller as the legendary Lord of the Apes. Weissmullers initial fame came via the Olympics. In 1924 and again in 1928, Weissmuller competed in swimming and won a total of five gold medals and one bronze. He turned that achievement into an acting contract and he became the logical choice to star in a new series of Tarzan films for MGM. During his tenure as Tarzan, he would become the most famous actor to portray the role, even though other actors came before and after him as Edgar Rice Burroughs character. And even though this poster does not have a great likeness of Weissmuller, it is none the less, the most coveted poster for the entire series. The poster has a few pinholes in the corners and a few in the center of the upper border and just below those in the artwork. There is a small hole between the R and Z of the title and there is a 3.25 inch clean tear in the lower border than extends into the background art. There is another small tear in the right border, some minor center point separation and a slight stain in Neil Hamiltons credit. Other than these slight imperfections, this is truly an amazing example of this stone litho poster with extremely fresh and bright colors. Very Fine-.
