Caption:
The 13th Chair (MGM, 1929). Rotogravure One Sheet (27 X 41). , Tod Brownings first foray into talking pictures also marks his earliest collaboration with Bela Lugosi, two years before the pair made the horror masterpiece Dracula. Inspector Delzante (Lugosi) is called to a British mansion in Calcutta to solve two murders, at first thought to have been committed by the young Helen ONeill (Leila Hyams) who is the ward of medium Madame LaGrange (Margaret Wycherly). Delzante gets to the bottom of the crimes by re-creating a s??ance at the location of one murder, and scaring the killer into a confession. Holmes Herbert and Conrad Nagel co-star. Tod Browning had been directing films for sixteen years at this point, with several early successes such as The Unknown and London After Midnight, which often starred Lon Chaney. Browning creates a dark and moody atmosphere in this thriller and Lugosi is powerful as the mysterious detective. Paper from this early Lugosi picture is scarce and always in high demand, and this gorgeous rotogravure is just sensational. It has been professionally restored to address fold wear, a few minor tack holes in the field, a small chip in the left border, one in the lower left corner, and a tear in the top border. Now displaying beautifully, this one sheet is a must have for fans of horror classics. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
