The Gaucho (United Artists, 1927). One Sheet (27 X 41). In this dark tale, Douglas Fairbanks takes a different turn on his chivalrous hero as an outlaw leader who exploits religion for his own nefarious purposes. As the unofficial leader of a community built on the sight of a miracle, Fairbanks laughs aloud as the faithful flock to the shrine of the Madonna. He drinks and womanizes in this apparently villainous role, and eventually Fairbanks experiences a religious conversion, thanks in part to the love of a good woman and in great part to an appearance by the Madonna herself (portrayed, unbilled, by Fairbanks wife Mary Pickford). In the finale the hero redeems himself, in the most grand Fairbanks style, as he rids the shrine of bandits. Lupe Velez co-stars in her first major film appearance. The film made a fortune at its release and, for Fairbanks, another in a string of hits for the star. We sold the other style one sheet in our sale last July for $14,950. The beautiful stone lithograph poster has some small amounts of border chipping and some slight wear in the two crossfolds in the center of the poster. Very Fine-.
