The Letter (Paramount, 1929). Full-Bleed One Sheet (27 X 41) Style B. , The Letter is the first film version of Somerset Maughams play (Bette Davis stars in the better known remake in 1940) and is the only surviving sound picture of the great stage and screen actress Jeanne Eagels. Eagels plays the wife of a Malayan plantation owner (Reginald Owen, in his American debut). Leslie shoots a Herbert Marshall (who would play the husband in the Davis remake!), who she claimed assaulted her. Her lawyer, however, finds a letter from Marshall to Owen that proves that she was in love with him. Shortly after the film was released, Eagels died a mysterious death in a hospital waiting room at the age of 39. She received the first posthumous acting Oscar nomination by the Academy for her work on this picture. A beautiful rendering of an anguished Eagels appears against a solid black background on this very rare Paramount full bleed, stone litho one sheet produced for the silent release. Never offered before by Heritage, and perhaps the only extant copy of this poster, it is a very unique find for connoisseurs of early Hollywood film! Professional restoration has addressed minor tears in the upper right, several very small tears in the image, slight fold separation and some wear to the bottom edge. The poster now displays beautifully. Very Fine- on Linen.
