In 2016, Avista owned and operated eight hydroelectric facilities and seven thermal generating facilities. It served about 367,000 retail electric customers and 326,000 natural-gas customers in eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and southern and eastern Oregon. It had a total generating capacity of 1,844 megawatts. About 35 percent its power supply came from natural gas, 9 percent from coal, and 6 percent from wind. Nearly half of its electricity still came from water power, fitting for a company that began in 1889 as The Washington Water Power Company.
