1876: Ezra Smith planted the first commercial orchard. He planted 30 acres of Yellow Newtown Pippin and Spitzenburg apples. Major freeze in 1919 caused many orchards to switch to pears and other varieties of apples though Spitzenburgs can still be purchased today.
