The Sacrifice (Kalem, 1912). British One Sheet (27.5 X 41). , Kalem Company film studios was founded in New York City in 1907, making such significant films as the first adaptation of Ben Hur and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1908). By 1910, the studio had expanded its presence to the West Coast to accommodate the demand for more western-style pictures. The Southern California studio was headed by director Kenean Buel, and included stars Alice Joyce, Gene Middleton, Tom Moore, George Melford, Jane Wolfe, Frank Lanning, Howard Oswald, Frank Brady, Knute Rahmn and Daisy Smith. In 1914, Kalem released the highly successful 119 episode serial The Hazards of Helen, starring Helen Holmes, and was sold to Vitagraph in 1917. The beautiful stone litho is a British one sheet (Waterlow Bro Layton Ltd Litho, London) from a drama featuring Alice Joyce (who made dozens of shorts for Kalem in the 1910s). The poster shows top edge wear with a chip, faint spots in the borders, and a tear in the right border, all of which are quite minor imperfections given the age of the piece. A highly unique find from the early days of cinema. Folded, Very Fine-.
