Caption:
The Unbeliever (Perfection Pictures, 1918). One Sheet (27 X 41). , Raymond McKee and Marguerite Courtot star in this thinly disguised WWI propaganda film. McKee is a high bred boy with contempt for the lower classes, who after being drafted to the battlefields of France, has a change of heart when he is crippled and still wins the heart of a Belgian peasant girl. Lt. Kurt von Schnieditz is played by Erich von Stroheim, an Austrian born actor who has an uncredited role in Birth of a Nation (1915). This fact is frequently disputed, as Stroheim often fabricated stories about his history (definitely not the first entertainer to do so), claiming himself to be an Austrian aristocrat and imperial officer, while in fact he was the son of a lower-middle-class hat maker and never served in any military. This absolutely gorgeous stone litho is certainly no fraud, though, with beautiful artwork of the lead actors and displaying only minor wear. There is a dust shadow in the top border, two small tears in the left border, cross fold separation, a tape stain on the verso that bleeds through faintly to the front in the credits, and two chips in the right border. Fine/Very Fine.
