Caption:
The White Hell of Pitz Palu (Universal, 1930). One Sheet (27 X 41). , G.W. Pabst and Arnold Fanck created a spectacular adventure when they filmed a mountain climbing expedition that tries to locate a missing climber amidst the mountain of Pitz Palu. The film carries the distinction of having some of the greatest cinematography ever shot on a mountain face. The film also starred Leni Riefenstahl who made a number of mountain adventures before she retired from acting and became one of the most important directors during Nazi era Germany. The film was shot and released in Germany in 1929 as a silent picture and when Universal picked it up for distribution in the United States, they hired NBC commentator Graham McNamee to do the films narration. McNamee was the first radio announcer to achieve international celebrity status and would later go on to narrate Universals newsreels. The poster, which features a great portrait of the legendary commentator, is exceptionally rare and is from the famed Berwick Collection. Prior to expert restoration the poster had two tears, each in the middle of the left and right side that went into the art. There were some smaller tears around the edges as well. The bottom three inches of the poster were missing, which is from near the top of McNamees name down, though the top half inch of the name was still present, and that area has been recreated with the use of an image from a pressbook. From the Berwick Discovery. Very Good+ on Linen.
