Caption:
A Free Soul (MGM, 1931). One Sheet (27 X 41). , Norma Shearer shines in one of her best Pre-Code films, making it difficult to believe that very early in her career Florenz Ziegfeld turned her down flat, reportedly calling her a dog, and criticizing her crossed eyes and stubby legs. It seems the actress had the last laugh, as she became a huge star at MGM, winning an Oscar for Best Actress in The Divorcee (1930) and was nominated for her role as the spirited Jan Ashe in this film, A Free Soul. Joining Shearer in a fairly minor role as a gangster is Clark Gable, as well as Leslie Howard and Lionel Barrymore, who won the Best Actor Oscar for his work. Shearer and Howard embrace on this lovely stone litho one sheet that has had touch up to address pinholes in the corners, small tears in the right border with one extending into the artwork, some small amount of surface paper loss in the credits, a small cut in the left background, and a corner crease in the upper right. The linen has been trimmed to the edge of the poster. Fine+ on Linen.
