Caption:
Anna Christie (MGM, 1930). One Sheet (27 X 41). , Gif me a vhisky, ginger ale on the side, and dont be stingy, baby. These, the first words uttered by Greta Garbo in her inaugural sound film, electrified audiences and confirmed the actress would have no trouble succeeding where other silent era stars had failed. MGM mounted a massive ad campaign to promote Anna Christie with the legendary ad line, Garbo talks! In fact, Garbos English was so good by the time she appeared in this film, she had to add an accent in several retakes to sound more like the Swedish Anna. Based on the play by Eugene ONeill (and filmed once before in 1923), the film follows a young woman trying to hide her past (prostitution) from her newly-found father (George F. Marion), as well as the Irish sailor (Charles Bickford) she has fallen for. This sublime, richly colored stone litho captivates, as Garbo, a woman with dark secrets, meets the viewers gaze evenly and resolutely. The rarity and superb quality of the poster--only pinholes in the corners, a tear in the right border, and touch up to fold wear--make this an absolute must for the highly discerning collector. Beautiful artwork rendered by William Galbraith Crawford. Very Fine on Linen.
