Check and Double Check (RKO, 1930). One Sheet (27.25 X 41). , From the 1920s through the 1950s, white comedians Charles Correll and Freeman Gosden wrote and voiced the wildly popular Amos n Andy radio show set in Manhattans historic black community of Harlem. In 1930, Correll and Gosden decided to take their show to the big screen, and rather than hire black actors, the duo played the title characters in blackface. In a typical Amos n Andy storyline, the twosome makes a go of their open-air taxi business, meeting up with Duke Ellington who hires them to transport his Cotton Club Band to a society ball. The picture is often credited with introducing Ellington to a wider fan base. Also on a musical note, Bing Crosby, Harry Barris and Al Rinker, known as The Rhythm Boys, can be heard singing Three Little Words, as three black actors actually lip-sync the tune in front of megaphones to disguise their lip movements. Box office results for the picture were average, and many found the blackface aspect unsettling. It would be the only feature film appearance for the beloved, long-running radio characters. Paper from this film does not surface often, and this is the first one sheet Heritage has presented. The bright stone litho colors look as if they were printed yesterday, and the piece features a portrait of Gosden and Correll, although they are not mentioned by name in the credits. Mounted on linen, the poster has had touchup to the folds, pinholes in the corners, a tear in the top left corner, two tears in the top border, one of which extends 4 into the M of AMOS, and tiny paper loss at the bottom crossfolds. A highly unique find for collectors of movie posters and entertainment collectibles, this one sheet format presents a rare opportunity. Very Fine- on Linen.
