Caption:
Felix Cops the Prize (Winkler, 1925). One Sheet (27 X 41). Pat Sullivan, a New Jersey based early pioneer in animation, met a young artist named Otto Messmer in 1916 and put him to work creating animated cartoons such as the Charlie Chaplin animated series. In 1921 Sullivan signed a deal with M.J.Winkler to release his output of one Felix the Cat cartoon per month, a character which Messmer had developed for Sullivan at Paramount. What was developed over the next nine years became the most famous animated character of its day. Felix began a merchandising boom that would not be equaled until Mickey Mouse arrived on the scene. Sullivan chose not to produce sound cartoons in 1930 due to expense and Felixs popularity quickly died. Sullivan died in 1933 and with him Felix as well as Messmers career. Felix was revamped briefly in the mid 1930s and later as a cartoon series in the early 1960s. Many great names in animation worked with Messner on Felix such as Bill Nolan of Krazy Kat fame and Al Eugster, Rudy Zamora and George Cannata. Felix was the greatest cartoon star of the 1920s and the posters from his shorts are especially rare. This great duo-tone stone litho one sheet is in nice condition with only minor border wear but does have four clean razor cuts above and below the upper and lower horizontal folds. These have been very lightly mended with archival tissue tape, otherwise this sheet is unrestored. Fine+.
