Caption:
Footlight Parade (Warner Brothers, 1933). One Sheet (27 X 41). , The early 1930s were the heyday years of the early sound musical films and Warner Brothers was at the forefront of this movement with the genius of Busby Berkeley, and three hit films in this year alone: 42nd Street, Gold Diggers of 1933, and Footlight Parade. This gorgeous and energetic classic boasts a line-up of talent that includes Joan Blondell, Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, and James Cagney. Cagney must put on a series of prologues in order to raise money for his next show. The chaotic rehearsals, sabotage, and back stage dramas culminate in one sensational climax featuring the unforgettable Harry Warren and Al Dubin hit numbers By a Waterfall, Honeymoon Hotel, and Shanghai Lil. Blondell, who had worked with Cagney in five previous films, is terrific as his wise-cracking His-Girl-Friday, with character actors Frank McHugh, Guy Kibbee, and Hugh Herbert adding to the fun. Presented here for the first time in a Heritage auction is the extremely rare and very desirable one sheet for this film. It has been professionally restored to address some chipping in the borders, crossfold separations with some minor paper loss, and creases in the top left. There was a top right corner chip in the border only. All of these issues have been expertly restored and are no longer apparent. It will surely be a long time before another pre-Code item of this rarity appears again. Fine+ on Linen.
