Caption:
Mickeys Wild West (FBO, 1928). One Sheet (26 X 40). , A Heritage first, this stone litho one sheet was inspired by a series of comedy shorts from 1927 to 1934 that launched the careers of Mickey Rooney and Billy Barty. The films were based on Fontaine Foxs popular comic strip series, Toonerville Trolley. In 1925 Fox placed a newspaper ad for a dark-haired child to play the role of Mickey McGuire. The ad caught the eye of Mrs. Nell Yule, who believed her son Joseph Joe Yule, Jr. (later known as Mickey Rooney) was right for the part. With no money to buy hair dye, Mrs.Yule improvised and took her son to the audition after applying burnt cork to his scalp. Young Mr. Yule got the part, and the series became very popular in its day, often rivaling Hal Roachs Our Gang. This was the ninth episode of a series that would consist of over 60 episodes. The poster boasts artwork by Alvin Cordell Hap Hadley, one of the greatest and most imitated poster artists of the 20th century. Hadley got his start as an on-set sketch artist for D. W. Griffith. Other poster credits include Hells Angels (1930), Buster Keatons The General (1927) and Charlie Chaplins The Circus (1928). Restoration has addressed a sliver of missing paper from the bottom to the middle of the left border, a chip in the left border, horizontal and vertical misfolds, and pinholes in the borders. Fine+ on Linen.
