Caption:
One Arabian Night (First National, 1921). One Sheet (27 X 41). Filmed in Germany in 1920 as Sumurun, Ernst Lubitsch not only directs this exotic love story but plays one of the make leads! In what turned out to be his last on-camera appearance (he was a former slapstick comedian), Lubitsch stars as Yeggar, a hunchbacked clown who works with a travelling carnival. Arab sheik Paul Wegener, of Golem fame which he would make within the year this film was made, demands that the troupes dancing girl Pola Negri be sequestered in his harem. Yeggar faithfully follows along, and is a horrified witness as Wegener kills Negri for presumed unfaithfulness. The wizened clown vows revenge on the wicked Sheik. Inspired by the popular stage pantomime The Arabian Nights, Sumurun is the film that encouraged Hollywood to invite Lubitsch into its fold, whereupon the director abandoned melodrama for good and concentrated instead on elegant sex comedies. This beautiful poster is the only copy we have ever seen from this historic film and the portrait of Negri is outstanding. Other than some minor paper loss in the lower left corner border and color touch to the foldlines, this poster is in pristine condition! Very Fine on Linen.
