Caption:
Oswald, the Lucky Rabbit in Africa Before Dark (Universal, 1928). One Sheet (27 X 41). Its fair to say that without Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, there would be no Mickey Mouse and no Walt Disney Company. In 1927, young Walt Disney created a new character for Universal, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. But a budget dispute would force Disney to leave Universal and strike out on his own. With the rights to the popular character contracted to Universal, Walt Disney literally went back to the drawing board and created Mickey Mouse. Oswald would eventually fall into obscurity while Mickey Mouse would become one of the greatest cultural icons of all time. In 2006, The Walt Disney Company decided to bring Oswald the Rabbit home. Sportscaster Al Michaels, long the face of Disney/ABCs Monday Night Football, wanted to join the Universal/NBC Sports team. In an unorthodox move, Disney agreed to release Michaels from his contract in exchange for the return of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to the Disney family. The deal was finalized and Oswald was back in the Disney fold. This only known copy of this poster for the Walt Disney produced Africa Before Dark has abrasions on the reverse along with fold separations and minor paper loss. Several small holes are present in the image area and there is a crease to the left of the title. The bottom right corner has been professionally replaced and the lettering in the image has been repaired. While there are tears in the top of the image, at the lions mouth and in Oswalds name, the borders are intact and have been cleaned. Disney era Oswald sheets are almost non-existent, and thanks to very nice professional restoration, this example display beautifully. Very Good/Fine on Linen.
