Caption:
Sally of the Sawdust (Paramount, 1925). One Sheet (27 X 41). Legendary filmmaker D.W. Griffiths silent comedy was the first starring role for the comic genius, W.C. Fields. He plays Prof. Eustace McGargle, a crusty but good-hearted cardsharp working with the carnival who befriends a couple, who die leaving their young daughter in his care. She grows up to become Sally, played by Carol Dempster, an actress whom Griffith had a lengthy relationship with. Due to Dempsters inability to carry the film, as in the original 1923 Broadway production of Poppy, it is left to Fields to fill the many gaps. He does so in his inimitable way while proving what a fine silent comedian he was. Although he would repeat his McGargle role in the 1936 sound remake of Poppy (and variations of him in several other comedies), Sally of the Sawdust remains historically important as a showcase for the younger and more adroit W.C. Fields in his Ziegfeld Follies period. This gorgeous stone litho one sheet is the only copy of this poster we are aware of and it is in beautiful condition. The poster is linenbacked and has only a tiny pinhole in each corner and a miniscule chip from the bottom border. Very Fine+ on Linen.
